Headaches and jaw pain can be bothersome, but if you have a high tolerance for discomfort, you may not think much of it and instead, continue to push it off hoping it will simply go away on its own. Unfortunately, TMJ pain isn’t something that just dissipates over time. If you’re unsure whether to seek the help of a professional, here are five potential dangers that can develop if you forgo necessary treatment.

Inability to Sleep

When your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are inflamed and not working properly because of a misaligned bite, you will begin to experience difficulty sleeping. Your airway will become obstructed, causing you to wake frequently throughout the night in an attempt to allow oxygen to your brain. This can lead to sleep apnea and put you at risk for a heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and other serious health conditions.

Frequent Headaches

Your TMJ and skull connect, so when inflammation occurs, it can travel throughout the muscles and up to your head. As a result, you can develop frequent headaches that can become debilitating. Waking with head pain and dealing with it throughout your day will become problematic, especially while trying to work or take care of your family.

Continuous Inflammation

When your jaw joints do not receive proper treatment, inflammation will continue to remain a present symptom. Over time, the joints will become damaged, making it virtually impossible for your body to heal because of the continuous inflammation. The only way to avoid any possible damage and recurring swelling is to seek treatment from a skilled professional.

Malnourishment

The foods you eat can make a drastic difference in how your body works. If you are taking in enough nutrients, you can expect to have higher energy levels and total-body health. However, if you lack the necessary vitamins and minerals, you will begin to suffer the effects of malnourishment. When dealing with TMJ Disorder, you are unable to comfortably eat solid foods. Instead, you’re confined to a soft food diet that will likely lack much of the protein and vital nutrients you need.

Breakdown of Tooth Enamel

If you are grinding your teeth as a result of your TMJ Disorder, do not be surprised if you notice a premature breakdown of your tooth enamel. It’s important to realize that once your enamel is gone, you cannot get it back. Yes, it can remineralize, but it cannot “grow” back. This can cause you to experience worsening oral health problems (i.e., tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, staining, etc.) as well as lowered self-esteem.

The dangers of TMD are many but choosing to seek professional treatment will help to lower your risk for these potential problems. Don’t wait until the issue worsens. Instead, make time to visit a trusted dentist who can offer safe and effective solutions to improve your jaw health and alleviate pain.
